Thirst for Knowledge meets Collecting Mania
20 October 2019, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Museums are facing challenging times: what seemed a must for an ethnographic museum in the past – for example, a collection of human skulls – is now a sensitive issue. The guided tour explores the motives behind the collecting mania of earlier days and poses questions as to the appropriate handling of sensitive objects today.

The world of Germaine Winterberg
6 November 2019, 18:00 - 19:30 PM

Germaine Winterberg is a master storyteller – for instance, about her adventures in distant lands or about her experiences in non-conformist, every-day life in Basel. Her work has resulted in a video project called “L’univers de Germaine” by Muda Mathis, Sus Zwick, and Hipp Mathis. It shows the 83-year-old adventurer following in the footsteps of Swiss pioneers such as Annemarie Schwarzenbach or Ella Maillard. The evening really gets going when Winterberg and her fascinating stories encounter the video artists who are no less full of temperament.

We enjoy nice clothes, not least because they emphasize our individuality. But how are the designs created? What stories are hidden behind each fibre? In “StrawGold” and other exhibitions we view objects that tell us about the backgrounds to our clothes and invite us to explore the world of fashion in other regions and cultures.

What’s sacred to me?
14 November 2019, 18:00 - 20:00 PM

People go in search of the “sacred” through religion and personal faith. Encounters with the “sacred” can be fascinating as well as disturbing, even change a person’s life trajectory. The Story Café is all about experiences and encounters with the “sacred”: participants are invited to contribute but nobody is forced to reveal secrets they wish to keep to themselves.

In Japan, the wrapping is part of the gift
30 November 2019, 11:00 AM - 16:00 PM

Japanese men and women pay as much attention to a present’s wrapping as to the gift itself. We show and explain various knotting and folding techniques with which objects of varying shapes and sizes can be wrapped in style. A gift acquires special meaning if it is wrapped in a furoshiki, a square cloth, instead of paper.

Exhibition

Bima, Mr Punch, and Demon

23 August 2019 - 2 August 2020

We are all familiar with the theatre. A very common and popular form is the puppet theatre in various forms. The exhibition presents stick puppets, shadow play figures, glove puppets, and marionettes from across Asia and Europe. The narratives in which they feature are performed not only for entertainment: the figures are identity-shaping and the stories help to explain the vagaries of the world. Puppeteers also make use of the opportunity to educate, to criticize reigning conditions and allude to possible courses of action.
