Interwoven and Entangled

Provenance Research on the Textile Collection

18 August – 29 September 2026

The textile collection at the Museum der Kulturen Basel is world famous. The present pop-up exhibition traces the threads of the collection’s history and questions how and why fabrics from across the globe found their way into the museum. Loop-based fabrics from Late Antique Egypt as well as ikat cloths from Indonesia are closely linked with the history of the museum. African garments bear evidence of colonial entanglements, while embroidered prayer cloths from Afghanistan offer opportunities to forge new relationships.
