Mother and Child

22 November 2019 – 5 January 2020

The infant and its parent figure make up an unequal couple. The relationship is subject to intense emotions and cultural norms. Across cultures, different notions of motherhood, ideal parents, and good children inform the image of the two figures. In Christian imagery, the good mother is best represented by the veneration of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In this regard, the exhibition is a quiet homage to the Basel Minster. Construction on this originally Romanesque church began a thousand years ago in dedication to the Mother of God.
