On every continent, the power of transformation turns masks into mysterious objects. In a new three-part exhibition, the Museum der Kulturen explores the fascination exerted by masks. Face masks from every part of the globe represent a sample of the unlimited expressive powers of masks. Costumes and disguises worn by masked revellers in various parts of Europe tell of the annual cycle of the dance of masks. Figures, masks, ancient documents and a “Fasnachtbeiz” (carnival restaurant) present a cross-section of Basel Fasnacht (carnival) – the colourful irreverent atmosphere that pervades an urban society.
