Carl and Georges Passavant: Travel photographs from Africa and China 1883-1889
Museum der Kulturen Basel, 5th May - 12th November 2006
Towards the end of the 19th century, two brothers from Basel - Carl and Georges Passavant - travelled extensively, inter alia, to Africa and Asia, from where they brought a rich collection of photographs back to Europe. Now, for the very first time, a selection from this impressive panorama of historic images will be on show to the public. The exhibition 'The "Other" in Perspective' follows the two brothers on their journeys through Africa and China, shedding light on contemporary attitudes to the exotic appeal of what were then remote parts of the world.
