Migration

Moving the World

May 19, 2017 – January 21, 2018

Human history is marked by migration. The phenomenon has shaped the lives and values of people around the globe and informed the economic and political development of countries and nations throughout the ages. But why do people migrate and what is set in motion by migration? The exhibition opens the door to world history as well as current affairs, Switzerland included. Objects slip into the role of migrants and come alive, offering a completely new perspective on issues we find ourselves confronted with every day.

The world is on the move: people migrate for many different reasons and along different routes. We showcase migration as a global phenomenon that has always existed – be it in the form of labour migration, due to political persecution or in search of religious freedom.

Creating home
October 4, 2017, 18.00 - 20.00

Is a house automatically a home? Can you create home, or homeland? The publication CARTHA – On Making Heimat reflects on the topic of migration and its ramifications, with a focus on architecture and urban research. Migration is regarded as a constant of human history – as in our Migration exhibition. Human nature resides in commonality, not difference, is one of the hypotheses advanced. So, can home only be created if everyone thinks and feels the same way? Can we have homeland when others evidently do not regard it as their home.

With the archtitect Manuel Herz, editor of CARTHA, www.carthamagazine.com, and Dr Anna Schmid, director of the museum. Host: Tatiana Vieira, Radio X.

Without migration Basel would possess fewer town mansions, no Roche Tower, and Lesser Basel would probably look quite different. Over the centuries, people from across the world and from all professions have found a second home in Basel and have helped to make the city what it is. Discover their traces on this historical tour of the city and get to hear some of their stories and histories.
