The world in a suitcase

June 29, 2012 – April 10, 2016

Between the end of the nineteenth and the mid-twentieth century explorers from Basel went on numerous expeditions, laying the foundation for the city’s extensive ethnographic collections. The exhibition traces the history of these expeditions.

Between the end of the nineteenth and the mid-twentieth century explorers from Basel conducted numerous expeditions, laying the foundation for the city’s extensive ethnographic collections. In the exhibition Expeditions. The World in a Suitcase the Museum der Kulturen Basel traces this history by describing four expeditions in detail, explaining the explorers’ motives and showing what they brought home with them in terms of collections and knowledge.

Measuring, salvaging, comparing, taking pictures
The visitors are taken along on a series of journeys: to Sri Lanka (Ceylon, 1883–1925) with Paul and Fritz Sarasin; to Vanuatu (New Hebrides, 1910–1912) with Felix Speiser; to Indonesia and East Timor (1935) with Alfred Bühler; and to Cameroon (1953) with Paul Hinderling and René Gardi.

Basis of world-famous collections
The exhibition presents roughly 540 objects, photographs as well as film and sound recordings, providing insight into the diversity of the Basel collections. The show is accompanied by a rich supporting programme that addresses issues concerning anthropology today and in the past.

We Take you on Expedition | Station 2: Expedition to the Basel Zoo
June 19, 2013, 5.50 p.m. to 7.30 p.m.

The event series “We take you on an expedition” focuses on various locations in Basel. Starting point is an artefact or a document shown in the exhibition Expeditions. The World in a Suitcase, but instead of staying in the museum we visit some other location in town.

Paul and Fritz Sarasin brought back with them from their 1883–1886 expedition to Ceylon not only 441 objects and 542 photographs, but also the elephant calf “Miss Kumbuk” which they donated to the Basel Zoo. Miss Kumbuk was the first elephant in Basel and, of course, a great attraction. Like other European cities in those days, the Basel Zoo staged shows commonly termed as Negro Villages or Human Zoos, which attracted large crowds of curious spectators. Between 1879 and 1935 the Basel Zoo put twenty-one such shows. What is our view on such spectacles today? How have the museum and the zoo changed since then, what is their role and how do they see themselves today?

With Rea Brändle, Gaby Fierz and Kathrin Rapp Schürmann; in collaboration with the Basel Zoo.

What did the explorers from Basel get to see in these far-off countries? Where did they travel to on their expeditions? What were they looking for and what did they find? Starting from the exhibition “Expeditions” you set off on your own expedition through Basel. Write down and take pictures of what you see and hear, and then put on your own little exhibition at the end.

How are the histories of the Basel chemical industry and the collections of the Museum der Kulturen related? We go in search of the links.

March 19, 2014, 10.00 to 12.00 noon

On their travels to far distant places, explorers recorded in their notes and diaries scientific observations, events they experienced, problems they faced as well as daily occurrences. Thirsty for Knowledge and Hungry for Travel: The Expeditions of the Early Anthropologists F. & P. Sarasin and A. Bühler
March 15, 2015, 11.00 a. m. - 12.00 noon

Thirsty for knowledge and desire to travel were traits common to the early Basel anthropologists Fritz and Paul Sarasin as well as to Alfred Bühler. But they differed in terms of scientific method. While the Sarasins’ approached the Vedda people of Sri Lanka in 1883 from a natural scientific perspective, Alfred Bühler in 1935 began searching for the systematic order of cultural technologies in Timor. Each expedition reflects the scientific practice and culture of its time.
