Woven Beauty The Art of West African Textiles 28.8.2009 - 16.5.2010 The Museum der Kulturen holds a significant collection of West African textiles that was assembled systematically in the mid-1970s. On a 16-month journey from Lagos to Dakar funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, the curator of the Africa Department at that time, Renée Boser-Sarivaxévanis, and the present curator, Bernhard Gardi, collected roughly 1,000 textiles. Now, a generation later, and on the occasion of the 50th independence anniversary of many African nations, the Museum der Kulturen presents an exhibition showing a rich selection of classic, and now rare, textile artworks from Mali, Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. Information Room: Building Project by Herzog & de Meuron A Glimpse at the Future of the Museum der Kulturen August 2008 - October 2010 Notice to the Visitors At present only the current special show and the permanent exhibition on the Basel Carnival are open to the public. We also have a special information room updating the visitor on the ongoing extension work at the Museum der Kulturen. The other permanent exhibitions, where usually objects from our African, American, European, Southeast Asian and Oceania collections are shown, have been cleared and remain closed during the period of extension work. When the newly designed and extended Museum der Kulturen reopens in 2011, the visitor will again be able to encounter and admire the exhibits from our marvellous collections. |
