Photo albums capture memories – of special events such as distant journeys abroad, of memorable family gatherings, or of close and beloved people. At the same time, photo albums also have the ability to disclose social realities, modes of economic production, and visual conventions. We juxtapose historical photographs with contemporary images and compare the works of African and European photographers, thus bringing to light different perspectives of the “Self” and the “Other”.

Old bread and dry cookies
3 March 2021, 18:00 - 19:30 PM

The Museum holds an extensive pastry collection: hundred-year-old tirggel (Xmas biscuits), buns, and Easter breads tell of seasonal rituals and regional specialities. How did the collection come about and what kind of stories do the old pastries hold? We’ve brought a few examples from the storeroom and now present them to you, but not without serving a few fresh pastries to go with them!

Moments of remembering and forgetting
7 March 2021, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

The exhibition playfully reveals practices with which people commemorate important moments in life, but quickly also forget about them again. From birth to death, significant events are passed down by word of mouth, chiselled in stone, or, as the case may be, kept secret.

Foundation

Foundation Museum der Kulturen Basel

The Foundation, which is based in Basel, was established on 23 December 1973. The Foundation supports activities of the Museum der Kulturen Basel, as specified by public mandate, which cannot be covered by the museum’s ordinary annual budget. These activities include
- the purchase, documentation and restoration of collection objects
- the temporary employment of research staff for special projects
- the realization of exhibition projects

Following the reconstitution of its Board of Trustees in 2013, the Foundation strives not only to raise awareness for its own work and mandate, but also to arouse public interest for the Museum der Kulturen Basel in its capacity as an anthropological institution of international standing. The Board of Trustees supports these objectives to the best of its ability.
Members of the Board of Trustees
Hans Rudolf Hufschmid (president), business consultant
Christoph Fuchs, economist
Anna Schmid, anthropologist
John Schmid, communication consultant
Stefan Schmid, solicitor and notary
