Floral textile art
18 August 2018, 11:00 AM - 16:30 PM

During the rainy season in Mexico, fantastic climbing plants make their way in the maize fields. The Mexican artist Alma Hernandez, who takes up this motif in her textile art, shows us how to create our own floral sculptures.

Big doesn’t always mean the same thing. The guided tour tells you more about the cultural dimensions of bigness, with power and status providing two good examples. But how is size defined and measured? And what’s so impressive about big things?

Large projects
5 September 2018, 18:15 - 19:45 PM

Martin Heller has headed quite a few large projects in his career, for example, Expo 02 or the European Capital of Europe Linz 2009. Beatrice Voirol is also an expert on big things: she curated the show BIG. The two tell us about their experiences – for all those who have big plans in mind! But note: big is relative; it can mean many things, from sustainable living to travelling the world, from starting up your own business to writing a book.

15 November 2018, 18:30 - 21:00 PM

A series of photographs reveals how exhibiting has changed between 1893 and 2018. Students from the University of Basel are invited to continue the series: how do they see the museum’s future? A committee then selects the ten best photographs and presents them to the audience. The prizes are to be awarded Prof. Dr. Andrea Schenker-Wicki, rector of the University of Basel.

Passing the Baton to the Basel Minster
9 December 2018, 10:00 AM - 20:00 PM

The eventful year ends with a token of good neighbourliness: we pass on the anniversary baton to the Basel Minster, which in 2019 is celebrating its consecration one thousand years ago. Together with Minster Reverend Caroline Schröder we cross the Minster Square in a festive procession – with a boat from our collections in tow to symbolize the crossing. Temporarily the vessel will lie at anchor in the nave of the Minster.

A rich and varied programme throughout the day in the Museum and the Minster.

Anniverary Year 2018

125 Years Museum der Kulturen Basel
