By Magali Rousseau, Company L’Insolite Mécanique

Flying machines as a theatre of illusions: in the context of the 10th International Basel Puppet Theatre Festival BAFF! we’re creating an interactive space for human beings and objects in the Hedi Keller Room of the Museum. The poetic flying machines created by the French artist enchant through their spiritedness and their moving mechanical bodies and coax viewers into interacting with them.

Mr Punch’s devilish conundrum. Or: the secret of sulking
von Marc Becker, Uraufführung
29 September 2019, 14:00 - 15:00 PM

The award-winning “Thalia’s Kompagnons” have travelled far and wide with their characters and stories and are now paying a visit to BAFF! with their play. In it, Mr Punch suffers an identity crisis after drinking a fiendish concoction, which throws him into a sullen mood. Unfortunately, the crisis also spreads to his friends, making them seriously doubt their roles in the play. Can our hero save the Punch and Judy show?

Play: Tristan Vogt; directed and stage-set by Joachim Torbahn

The tasks of collecting, preserving, research, and display pose ever greater challenges for museums. Today, conflicting ideas about objects tend to clash: can one show this object or preferably not? Do museums in the first place have the right to hold certain objects?

Thirst for Knowledge meets Collecting Mania
20 October 2019, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Museums are facing challenging times: what seemed a must for an ethnographic museum in the past – for example, a collection of human skulls – is now a sensitive issue. The guided tour explores the motives behind the collecting mania of earlier days and poses questions as to the appropriate handling of sensitive objects today.

The world of Germaine Winterberg
6 November 2019, 18:00 - 19:30 PM

Germaine Winterberg is a master storyteller – for instance, about her adventures in distant lands or about her experiences in non-conformist, every-day life in Basel. Her work has resulted in a video project called “L’univers de Germaine” by Muda Mathis, Sus Zwick, and Hipp Mathis. It shows the 83-year-old adventurer following in the footsteps of Swiss pioneers such as Annemarie Schwarzenbach or Ella Maillard. The evening really gets going when Winterberg and her fascinating stories encounter the video artists who are no less full of temperament.

Japanese men and women pay as much attention to a present’s wrapping as to the gift itself. Donkey Carts & Oranges

Sicilian Folk Culture

20 November 2015 - 17 January 2016

Sicily is distinct, especially as far as culture is concerned. The Museum der Kulturen holds an extraordinary collection of Sicilian folk culture. Worth special mention are the large and small ceramics (incl. the cribs), the opera dei pupi (puppet figures), and the brightly coloured donkey carts, which one actually no longer finds in the streets but in all shapes and sizes as motifs on a large range of products, instead.

Among the Sicilian landscape's typical features are the extensive orange and mandarin groves. The fruits' provenance is often revealed by the wrapping paper they come in which usually features, next to the producer and the brand name, a colourful picture. The Sicilian "orange papers” serve as the ambassadors of the respective region of origin and, together with the donkey carts on which the fruits are transported, they provide an ideal starting point for a fascinating journey through Sicilian folk culture. Among other things, the Christmas exhibition makes clear how symbols of regional identity are created, reinforced and conveyed.
