The most valuable, the best known, and the most popular – the “Best of” guided tour presents select objects from all exhibitions. At the same time, we question the criteria of such rankings. What are they based on: collectors’ interests, scientific value or personal preferences? What’s at the top of your personal list, and why?

Pretty clothes are fun and contribute to our individuality. But how are designs created? What narratives lie hidden in the yarn? In StrawGold and other exhibitions we encounter numerous objects that provide background information as to the way we dress, and invite us to explore fashion traditions in other parts of the world.

My fabulous creature
2 June 2019, 13:00 - 17:00 PM

Using wood, furs, cloth leftovers, tulle, shells, and bags of imagination we create a mythological creature. At the same time, we consider where the materials come from. Are they natural or artificial?

Who Needs this mask? Discussions concerning the restitution of cultural heritage objects
5 June 2019, 18:00 - 19:30 PM

What’s behind the claims for the restitution of cultural heritage objects? What does restitution mean for the future of anthropological museums? How does one reconcile the interests of the countries of origin with the concerns of research and conservation and the interest of museum visitors? In a short guided tour of Thirst for Knowledge meets Collecting Mania we first take a look at some “sensitive” objects before debating the issue in a podium discussion.

With Dr Anna Schmid, director of MKB, Prof Dr Elisio Macamo, University of Basel, and Prof Dr Gesine Krüger, University of Zurich.

Thirst for Knowledge meets Collecting Mania
9 June 2019, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Museums are facing challenging times: what seemed a must for an ethnographic museum in the past – for example, a collection of human skulls – has now become a sensitive issue. The guided tour explores the motives behind the collecting mania of earlier days and poses questions as to the appropriate handling of sensitive objects today.

FRIENDS OF THE MUSEUM

Patrons and partners make a major contribution to the museum’s success, thanks to their financial and moral support. Join them and become part of the success story.
Government funding covers the basic costs of the museum’s operations. Acquisitions for the collection, the production of publications, investments in the building and many other activities are, however, only possible with additional funds. The museum has therefore always relied on private donations and on financial support from foundations.

A Friends organisation called the ‘Fünfliberclub’ was founded in 1898 to support the museum’s work. It was renamed Kulturkreis in 1998. By joining the ‘Kulturkreis’, you will give your support to collecting, researching and communicating the cultural assets of our world. With your financial commitment, you will not only support us in our work, but also benefit from a number of privileges offered by the museum.

  • You gain free admission to exhibitions, guided tours and lectures.
  • Your receive invitations to private viewings.
  • You receive the latest events programme ‘muskult’ at regular intervals.
  • You receive the museum’s Annual Report.
  • You receive the ‘Museums-Pass Musées’ at a reduced rate.
  • You receive exclusive invitations to special events only for members.
  • You receive 10 % discount at the Museumshop.

These offers are constantly being expanded.

Any questions? Would you like to joint the ‘Kulturkreis’ and support the Museum der Kulturen?  If so, get in touch with us!
