Mentioned in documents for the first time in 1355, the «Rollerhof» building reflects many centuries of dazzling Basel history. Owners have included the Cathedral Chapter, Basel mayors and also factory owners, as well as a banker to the Austro-Hungarian Imperial court. The picturesque wooden bowers of the inner courtyard were erected in around 1667 while, a hundred years later, stucco ceilings were added to the rooms in keeping with the Rococo style of the period. Sensitive renovation work carried out by the architects Diener & Diener in the year 2000 achieved the present-day harmony between the modern restaurant and the historic parts of the building. |
